The Dutch have had an easy time of it so far, winning all three games without ever being tested. Yet they did not look all that good without Arjen Robben against Denmark and Japan and only won after some poor defensive play gifted them goals. Nonetheless, they have looked relatively solid at the back themselves though no side has asked any serious questions about them so far. Robben played against Cameroon as a substitute so he may be in line for a start. If he doesn’t however, Holland will once again have to rely on Robin Van Persie and Wesley Sneijder to unlock the opposition’s defence.
Slovakia were dire against New Zealand and the last gasp equaliser they conceded against the All Whites looked to have doomed them to an early exit. Then they were easily beaten 2-0 by Paraguay and it seemed all that was left was to start packing. Yet Italy drew against New Zealand giving Slovakia a chance which they took with Robert Vittek scoring twice in an epic 3-2 win over the defending champions. In an astonishing conclusion, Slovakia withstood the Italian onslaught, hitting them on the break before the final whistle saved them.
Despite their heroics against Italy, Slovakia are not deemed to be a threat and are $9.00 to win the match in normal time. Holland are $1.44 to win in the same manner and this appears to be a good bet. The Dutch defence will not be as susceptible to counter attacks as the Italians were and calm, consistent pressure will eventually pay dividends. If the score remains 0-0, the Dutch will not panic and the Slovakian rearguard will then be breached. Then Holland will easily close out the match within the 90 minutes.
Verdict: Holland to comfortably progress
